FAQ's: WEDDING PLANNING

+I tend to show up late. Is it important I be on time to my wedding?
YES! Most weddings are timed so that the final pictures can be taken on the beach at sunset. Although it's true that the guests and Kathryn will wait for you, the sunset won't! The time scheduled has been carefully arranged to allow for all of the images you are hoping for. Remember, it is not possible to "make up" lost time (especially on a sunset wedding.) We do not have the long "twilight" time that is enjoyed on the mainland (it becomes dark within 10-15 minutes after the sun sets.) Even a fifteen minute delay can impact the outcome of your photography coverage. Also, it is not uncommon for the minister, musicians, and other people helping you with your wedding to have another commitment either before or after your wedding. SO...out of respect for their schedule and for the best possible photographs PLEASE be on time!

+I'm having my hair done. Are there any hair styles I should avoid?
Chances are that most of your photos will be taken outside, even if your ceremony is indoors. We do have tradewinds most of the year. This is a good thing to be aware of in regards to veils and "tendrils" around the face that may blow in the wind. It may be a good idea to do a test run on your hair so that you are confident that you feel comfortable and beautiful in the style that you have chosen. If the groom is willing, a little gel and/or spray may be helpful in his hair as well.

+I'm planning on spending time on the beach. Should I be careful not to get sunburned?
Yes, please be very careful about our Maui sun! The sun here is strong and you can become burned without realizing it (even on an overcast day or underwater!) White strap marks and sunburned faces are not attractive in your wedding pictures.

+I have a figure flaw that I'm self-conscious about. Can you minimize this in my photographs?
Please let Kathryn know if there is anything that you are uncomfortable with or worried about. She will take this into consideration in her posing and help you to look your very best.

+Some of my wedding guests don't "get along". Do you want to know about this?
It is important to let Kathryn know if there is an uncomfortable family situation. If she is informed she can handle it in a delicate way and avoid any unnecessary embarrassment or hurt feelings on your wedding day.

+I am having my wedding on a public beach. Should I consider using a private location or hotel grounds?
If privacy is a concern, you may want to consider paying for hotel grounds or a private location. Public beaches are popular with our visitors and residents and because all beaches in Hawaii are public, it is not possible to reserve them. It is possible and likely that there may be other weddings taking place at the same location & time as your wedding. Some of the private locations and most hotels are on or near the beach so you can still get beach and sunset shots after your ceremony. Many of the private locations & hotels offer protection from the elements such as wind and/or rain. You may find it worthwhile to pay a location fee, not only to insure privacy, but to take advantage of the variety of scenery that some of the hotels offer. Many Hotels offer lush tropical garden scenery, man-made waterfalls as well as a beach front location. Kathryn no longer accepts public beach weddings. Consult with your photographer or coordinator about the best location for your needs.

+I'm having my wedding on a public beach next to a hotel. Can we go onto their grounds for photos?
Most of the hotels do not allow you to go onto their grounds wearing your wedding attire with a professional photographer without paying their grounds fee (typically $800+) This fee usually applies even if you are a guest at the resort.

+I'd like to have Kathryn photograph my wedding at two different locations or have her do some pictures in the morning and some at sunset. Is there an extra fee?
Yes - there will be a change of location fee which usually also involves more time added to your coverage. It can be quite an undertaking to move locations when you and your guests need to get in the car and drive. In addition, Kathryn has to pack up her equipment (which is substantial.) This is one of those things that sounds easy but can be quite a "momentum" breaker. It almost always takes longer than anticipated. Kathryn usually discourages it as she feels it takes valuable time away from your photography coverage. Splitting the coverage from morning to sunset or another day will require a separate sitting fee. Please consult with Kathryn about the fees required for each specific request.

+I am interested in the 36 5x5 package, does this mean that you will only take 36 photos?
Kathryn will take over 36 photos with the exact amount determined by how much time she has with you and how well you do in front of the camera. The quality and amount of photographs taken will be directly affected by the cooperation and promptness of your wedding party. Given this, she will take plenty of photos to insure a variety of different poses for you to choose from. Note - this answer applies to all photo packages, not just the 36 pack.

+Why don't you accept weddings of more than 20 guests or so?
Kathryn's true passion and talent is in capturing romantic, elegant images of the bride and groom. She appreciates the importance of family and friends and loves making creative images of small groupings of special guests. She works alone and has found that groups of 20 or less is comfortable for her style of photography. It is wonderful if you are lucky enough to have lots of family and friends to share in your wedding, however, Kathryn will probably refer you to a photographer who enjoys working with larger groups.

+How much time should I allow and what photography package should I pick?
The package you choose depends on several factors:
  1. Number of people attending - the more guests you have the more coverage you will need.
  2. Does your wedding include cake, champagne, limousine, video, etc. - the more "goodies" your wedding includes, the longer the photography takes.
  3. Wedding Location. For instance, hotels like the Maui Prince offer so much variety (lush vegetation, waterfalls & beach) that couples often choose larger packages to cover all the possibilities.
  4. The Album - see "Can you describe the albums?" below.

+What's the best time of day to have my wedding so I can get the nicest possible photos?
Photographically speaking, the best time of day is late afternoon into sunset, this is when the lighting is most flattering. It will be cooler & more comfortable for you and your guests. The worst time of day is ±10:00am to ±2:00pm when the sun is directly overhead. Direct overhead bright sunlight results in highly undesirable photographic lighting conditions, in addition, the temperature is often an uncomfortable 90° (& humid) during the mid day hours.

+Does it matter what day of the week I choose for my wedding?
If you are having your wedding on a public beach it would probably be best to choose a week day. The beaches tend to be more crowded on the weekends (Saturdays in particular.)

+We are having a sunset wedding, what time should we start?
The sunset time varies between 5:30 to 7:15 with the shortest days in the winter. Once you select the appropriate package, you need to make sure you schedule your wedding to allow enough time. For instance, if the sun sets at 7:00 on your wedding day and you choose the 36-pack (a 2-hour package) you need to start your wedding at 5:00. We usually schedule the sunset time as the ending time of your photography coverage. The sun sets fast in the tropics with very little twilight time. Shortly after the sun sets - there is no longer enough available light. We don't have the luxury of making up time at the end on a sunset wedding.

+If I hire Creative Touch Photography who will I get as my photographer?
Creative Touch Photography is a sole proprietorship that is owned and operated by the photographer herself - Kathryn Regier. Therefore, if you hire Creative Touch Photography you will get Kathryn as your photographer. This also means that any and all promotional photos you may have seen (web site, brochures, magazines, etc.) by Creative Touch Photography were taken by Kathryn Regier.

+What kind of camera will you use?
Kathryn uses strictly medium format hasselblad portrait cameras and lenses - the finest equipment available. Additionally, she carries a complete back-up hasselblad camera body, lenses and flash to all of her weddings.

+What is medium format photography?
  1. Technically, medium format photography refers to the size of the negative that the camera produces, that is, a medium format camera produces a "medium" sized negative. Normal 35mm photography that you are accustomed to would be considered to produce a "small" negative.
  2. Kathryn uses Hasselblad cameras and lenses. This is one of the most popular, reliable, and respected brands of medium format cameras. This camera produces large 2¼ x 2¼ inch square negatives (3½ times larger than a 35mm negative). A medium format negative has to be enlarged only 2.2 times to produce a standard 5x5 print, whereas a 35mm negative must undergo far more magnification to produce the equivalent size 4x6 print. As a result, photos from medium format are extremely sharp and ideal for enlargements - up to wall-portrait size.
  3. Medium format cameras are often referred to as "Portrait" style cameras. The model Kathryn uses is completely manual allowing precise manual control of aperture, exposure, focus, (and flash when needed.) Working "manually" requires expertise in the delicate, dynamic "science & art" of lighting.
  4. Medium format photography equipment is more expensive to purchase and maintain. The film itself is more expensive to purchase and process. Most retail photo labs that you are accustomed to do not process and/or print medium format film. Kathryn uses the services of one of the most reputable professional photo labs (catering strictly to professional photographers) in the nation for all of her processing and printing. These are some of the reasons why you may have noticed a substantial price difference in the cost of medium format photography packages vs 35mm packages.

+What is your "style" of photography?
The best way to understand Kathryn's style is to look at her photos. However, if I had to describe her style in words I'd say it is elegant, contemporary/traditional and creative. Her style is not photojournalistic (a spontaneous & candid 35mm usually black & white style of photography which has recently become popular.) Other than ceremony photos, she choreographs most of her work, however, she strives to create images that feel natural and capture emotion. Of course, she is always alert and ready to capture spontaneous moments when they occur.

+Do you take pictures during the ceremony?
Generally the coverage starts with the limousine arrival (if applicable), entrance of the bride, candid shots of the ceremony, followed by cake, champagne & formals of the Bride & Groom. If you have guests attending Kathryn will do any family and friend combinations that you would like. For sunset weddings, the last ½ hour of coverage is reserved for the Bride & Groom's beach and sunset photos. It is important that you choose the appropriate package that allows time for coverage of these events.

+I have certain shots that I would like, when should I tell you about them?
Kathryn would like to review your list prior to the wedding so she can make sure you have allowed enough time to get all of the shots you are hoping for. You should assign your list to someone in your wedding party who knows all of your guests to be in charge of "gathering" each group. If you do not have guests but have some ideas or images you have seen that you would like to share, Kathryn is more than happy to look them over and talk to you about them. Of course your wedding will be unique and your images will reflect you and your day. Special requests will be considered and (depending on location, time of day, lighting conditions, cooperation, promptness and your personalities) every effort will be made to get the specific images you desire.

+Can we meet you before the wedding so you can take some of the formal shots before our guests arrive?
At certain locations not only is it possible, Kathryn highly recommends the couple meet her for some formals of the bride and groom around the grounds before the ceremony. Many couples find it relaxing and helpful to spend some time together beforehand. However, this means that you will need to arrive on-time and ready to go at the time we set. The number one complaint made by photographers is tardiness on the part of the bride/groom and/or wedding party. If you are late your photos will suffer - remember the sunset waits for no one!

+Can you cover my reception as well?
Most of our weddings in Hawaii take place outdoors, as a result, receptions are casual and typically take place immediately following the ceremony and consist of cake cutting and champagne. If you are having a reception after sunset you may want to consider posing your cake and champagne shots beforehand to take advantage of the light of day and the beautiful scenery.

+Can you take black & white photos, if so, how does this work?
Yes, Kathryn will gladly substitute a roll of your color film for a roll of black and white at no additional charge - you must inform her of this prior to the wedding. Her camera has film backs that hold one roll each (12 exposures). The film cartridge can be removed from the back of the camera at any time mid-roll. Kathryn will load up one of the film backs with B&W film and when she sees a shot that she feels would be nice in B&W she will remove the color film back, replace it with B&W, take a shot then go right back to color.

+Do you have any advice to help insure a "smooth" wedding day?
Yes, make sure that you are on time to your wedding! In order to create beautiful portraits, Kathryn will need to be able to spend the time you deserve and paid for without being rushed. The sun sets fast in the tropics with very little twilight time. Once the sun has set - there is not enough available light to capture the beautiful scenery. Relax! You have put a lot of time and energy into planning the perfect wedding and now that your special day is here, place your trust in the people you have hired. Enjoy each other and the beauty of the moment.

+I'd like to get a second album for my parents. How much will it cost?
The price for additional albums varies dramatically depending on when you order it! If you order and pay for additional album(s) before your wedding day it will be much less expensive. This is because our photo lab can print all of them at once (before they individually cut the negatives) and it's much easier and therefore less expensive. If you order additional album(s) after your wedding day it will be more expensive. Contact us for pricing on additional album(s) purchased before your wedding day.

+How does the private wedding homepage work?
A selection of your wedding photos are scanned and up-loaded onto a private directory on the Internet. Your homepage showcases your wedding photos and is typically ready about 3 weeks after your wedding day. It includes a complete e-commerce photo order system which allows your family & friends to purchase photos for themselves. It is private and not "searchable" by search engines and therefore not available to the general public. It will be available solely to you, your family, friends and anyone else you choose to tell. It's a great way to "share" your wedding with those who are unable to attend.
